King Tides and Dangerous Rip Currents Impact California Coast Through Midweek

The California coastline is experiencing hazardous conditions due to king tides, which are the highest tides of the year.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), southern California beaches are facing dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and elevated high tides through at least late Wednesday.

Why It's Important?

The ongoing king tides pose significant risks to beachgoers, residents, and small watercraft operators. The NWS warns of an elevated drowning risk as strong rip currents and large waves can pull individuals into the water, wash people off rocks and beaches, and capsize small boats. Low-lying coastal neighborhoods, particularly in Newport Beach, are at risk of flooding. Travel disruptions may occur due to flooded roads and parking areas. Surfers have reported dangerous conditions, with waves reaching up to 20 feet at the Wedge in Newport Beach. These conditions have already led to multiple fatalities and injuries, underscoring the severity of the situation.
